No Favoritism, James 2:1-7

October 10, 2019

How can you claim to have faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ if you favor some people over others? James 2:1

This week, we are moving onto chapter 2 and the Digging into the Theme and Details section of journaling questions from the study guide.

For my reflection, I chose this question to answer about favoritism. “How is this truth shown today in our churches? Families? Believers? The world?”

Who do we show favoritism in our churches these days? Confession, there is a gal in our church who is a huge influencer in the home décor world and I have sought her out more than I have worked to connect with the random folks sitting around me. Do church leaders favor those who are able to write big checks? It is a tension most leaders must face on a regular basis. In families, we all play our roles. It’s easy to favor those who are easy to get along with, but God is calling us to love each person as he does, to forgive each person as he does, and to have mercy on each person as he does. Ouch. That is a hard truth. How in the world can we possibly do this? It is only by his Spirit moving in and through our hearts and minds. His life force transforming our hearts and thoughts to be more like his.

Lord Jesus, fill us to overflowing with you today so that we can honor each and every person around us as you do. Show us your heart for each person we encounter today. Help us to see them as you do. Help us to love when it is difficult. Help us to show mercy as you have shown us mercy.

What has the Lord shown you today through your study of this section of James? Let's chat about it in the comments below.

In this faith vs. works conversation, I have seen it as a Paul of Romans verses James. Here it is clearly Jesus who calls himself and us to a faith that acts, a faith that shows up mightily in God working through us. James writes to the believers in a time before the Bible was compiled. His words mirror Jesus’s words that a genuine faith DOES.

Yikes! This is a weighty section of scripture filled with centuries of grace vs. deeds debates. The question really comes down to “What is a saving faith?”

We are not chained by the law of love. Our bonds are loosed and our souls can freely love others, not out of duty or “should”, but with the Spirit of the Lord coursing through us unbound.
